“I Inside the Old Year Dying,” PJ Harvey

Another masterpiece from British poet, songwriter and rocker PJ Harvey? She’s almost there: seven years after the impetuous The Hope Six Demolition Projectthe musician resurfaces with an album finding its origins in the collection of poetry (Orlam) which she published last year. Thus, the meaning to be given to these new songs is open to interpretation, but there is somewhere a question of a dream of escape, while the ghost of Elvis hovers there, evoked in particular in the superb A Child’s Question, August. Passed the first two and agonizing songs, Lwonesome Tonightwith its light melody and acoustic guitar motif, echoes the atmosphere of the huge Let England Shake (2011), and again on the smoky, almost dub, The Nether-edgewhile All Souls seems to want to disintegrate in our ears. Throughout the album, the songs unfold before atmospheric sounds, church bells and birdsong, which give depth to the famous melodies of the seasoned composer.
