“I have the strength to think that these magistrates and these magistrates judge according to the law”reacts Wednesday, May 17 on franceinfo, the former Minister of Justice Christiane Taubira, after the conviction on appeal for corruption and influence peddling of ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy in the so-called “wiretapping” case.

The Paris Court of Appeal confirmed the sentence of three years in prison, including one year firm, pronounced at first instance in this case. At the heart of this file are telephone interceptions between Nicolas Sarkozy and his lawyer Thierry Herzog dating from 2014. The former head of state has decided to appeal to the Court of Cassation.

While several right-wing politicians have criticized this judgment, seeing in it in particular a “will to humiliate” by Nicolas Sarkozy, Christiane Taubira “still wants to trust magistrates and magistrates to think that it is on the basis of files, of evidence that these judgments are pronounced according to the law”, she hammers.

“I guess lawyers recognize that because they generally accept the fact that sometimes they fail to convince on certain points and that judgments are made according to the law,” considers the former Keeper of the Seals.
