Audience: What memories do you have of these six years in the credits of Sex and The City?
Sarah Jessica Parker: Excellent. Yet TV was “terra incognita” for me. I honestly thought I was going to wallow. When in doubt, I had even circulated a script throughout my family. When reading the script, everyone said to me: “Go for it Sarah!” It was only my mother who was not convinced.
Oh yes ? Why ?
She believed that we weren’t putting condoms on this show, and that the sex scenes were real. I had to explain to him that the coitus was feigned!
Since we are talking about nudity, is it true that a few years ago, Playboy approached you to pose nude?
It’s true ! The magazine had made me a golden bridge to photograph my breasts in the air. But it goes back a long time already. I also turned down $ 10 million to star in a movie naked. And yet, it would have significantly improved the ordinary.
“I had to buy a cellar to store my shoes”
What was your childhood like?
I come from a family where every dollar spent counted. I see my mother telling us: “Sorry, there will be no presents for Christmas this year”. It’s tough when you’re 14-15 to see all your girlfriends jiggling around in brand new jeans while you, you wear the threadbare plaid skirts of your older sisters.
Who holds the stock exchange in your home?
But it’s me, what a question! It is better besides because if it was Matthew (her husband Matthew Broderick, editor’s note.), He would be appalled by the number of shoes that I buy myself per month! I am a pathologically incurable shoe addict. My fantasy would be to be able to be locked up for an entire night in a Manolo Blahnik store and raid (Laughs.)
What does your walk-in closet look like?
The walk-in closets in Manhattan are small, so I bought a cellar to store everything! For years, I accumulate or rather I pile up all the outfits that the productions kindly gave me. It must be said that I am very petite and therefore these clothes which were specially created for me cannot be resold. Sometimes they are even unique models.
Still addicted to shopping by what I see!
But again, it’s one of the legends that stick to my skin. If you only knew how much I hate shopping. They are often crowded with people. Why would you want me bothering to shave the walls when all those nice dressmakers or makeup artists are even ready to come to my house?
“I have smoked only one real cigarette in my life”
When you walk the streets of New York, are you also concerned about your appearance?
Do you have to wear Givenchy to throw a Frisbee at your son? I am not convinced of it! What I look for in a garment is above all something practical. Good old jeans giving up the ghost, for example. But nothing prevents you from accessorizing it with a little more chic top if the heart tells you.
Your son, when he was a child, couldn’t stand you being on your thirty-one …
Anecdotes, I have plenty! One morning he asked me, “Why do you always put on stepladder shoes? Is it because you can’t reach for the cereal box?” At that moment, I realized that James had a funny perception of me. Above all, I felt that he missed me. Suddenly, we made an agreement. I promised him that I would be home tucking him in at least four nights a week.
You give the impression of being a very healthy person …
I have always had a very clean life. I must have smoked only one real cigarette in my life – a cigarette with tobacco, because the ones I smoked in Sex and the City were made from dried lettuce. Drugs, I’ve never touched them.
Are you, yourself, a fan of someone?
I am a fan of Catherine Deneuve. I ran into her one day on a red carpet. I approached by throwing him a “Nice to meet you” from the bottom of my heart. Since she didn’t hear me, I repeated a little louder. Madame Deneuve then turned around and looked at me like a plague victim. She took the scampering while making sure that I did not follow her!
What advice would you give to those who would like to warm up a too lukewarm libido?
There is nothing more erotic than a hushed, slightly hoarse voice a la Lauren Bacall. Again, no exaggeration, you don’t have to smoke three packs of cigarettes and bring down a bottle of whiskey a day. Just talk to her slightly leaning forward, tucking her stomach and a tone below. You will see, it’s magic!
Is it a drag to be a hot girl?
I have never been beautiful in the sense that Hollywood understands it. I am a half-breed, a mix of Russian, Jewish, Redskin, Welsh, Scottish and German origins. I would never have a perfect nose and as an added bonus, I have unfiltered hair. Sure, there are things I could fix, but I don’t intend to. And I’m glad the producers have finally broadened their definition of “pretty”.
