A crack seller accused of killing the father of one of his clients with a baseball bat reportedly went so far as to call the latter to threaten him just minutes after the attack.

“He told me: I had your father, he died. It’s as if he was happy when he spoke to me on the phone,” Kenny Riches explained Friday morning at the Montreal courthouse.

His father Georges Riches was allegedly attacked with a baseball bat by Akong Yves Fonbah while sleeping on his sofa in September 2021. The 30-year-old is currently undergoing his jury trial on a charge of premeditated murder.

This is because the accused, a crack seller, was allegedly in conflict with Kenny Riches.

“We had arguments here and there about money,” Mr. Riches confessed.

And on the day of the murder, Fonbah, nicknamed Ocho, would not have wanted to sell drugs to the victim’s son.

“I spoke to him on the phone. He threatened to kill my father and me. But I didn’t care about it,” said Mr. Riches.

Except that shortly after midnight, while Kenny Riches was consuming hard drugs with friends in his room, Fonbah allegedly entered the home he shared with his father.

He then allegedly fatally hit the 75-year-old man in the head with the baseball bat that had belonged to the Riches family for decades.

“I heard a big bang! I rushed into the living room. I saw Ocho standing there and my father’s head smashed…” said the victim’s son, his voice breaking with emotion.

“My father looked me in the eyes and waved goodbye. “That’s when I knew he was going to die,” he continued.

Kenny Riches allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife and chased the accused in order to make him leave the apartment. He then called 911 in panic.

“Send the police now. A black guy came in and attacked my father,” he told the dispatcher from the outset.

Threats to the police

Shortly after the police arrived, Fonbah allegedly called Kenny Riches several times, threatening him “not to be stupid” and that he was “going to kill him.”

Except that an agent who was near Riches would have picked up the phone and heard everything, Kenny Riches testified.

Akong Yves Fonbah was then arrested by the City of Montreal Police Department.
