“I could have stayed there”: Charlotte Gainsbourg broken by the death of her sister Kate

He must have missed his family terribly. Back in France after years spent in the United States, Charlotte Gainsbourg is responsible for highlighting her parents. She continues the transformation of Serge Gainsbourg’s apartment, located at 5 bis rue de Verneuil, into a museum. She also made her first film at the cinema, a documentary, an intimate portrait of her mother entitled Jane by Charlotte. If she had chosen to leave our country a few years ago, it was because the artist could not digest the dramatic death of her sister Kate Barry.

I wanted us to spend time together

On December 11, 2013, the photographer actually died after falling from the fifth floor of her Paris building. The cause of this accident remains, to this day, unknown. This mystery, a real mental torture for her sister, pushed her to change continents… but now she felt the need to get closer to her family, especially her mother Jane Birkin. “Wracked with guilt for leaving at a difficult time for her, caring about myself first, I wanted us to spend time together“, she explains in the columns of The Obs.

After my sister died, I was wasting away

Since her return, Charlotte Gainsbourg has had a string of projects. Heroine of season 2 of the series In Therapyshe will star in the movie passengers of the night by Mikhaël Hers, with Emmanuelle Béart, from May 4, 2022. It is therefore without regret that she left the city of New York, taking her small family with her. “Question of survival, after the death of my sister, I was wasting away. I could have stayed there she continues. And then Trump, the Covid… What was I doing there? It was not my country. I needed to reconnect with France, which I love deeply.” French citizens, those who have been following his adventures and those of his famous family for years, are certainly not complaining about his return…
