“I can’t believe the government didn’t know anything,” reacted on Saturday March 26 on franceinfo, the lawyer for families who consider themselves victims of Orpea Sarah Saldmann, after the announcement of a state complaint against the group, accused of having created a system of optimization of profits in its nursing homes, to the detriment of residents and employees.
The lawyer believes that it is “A very good news“but it’s also “a piece of news that comes a bit late, insofar as I want to hear that the book [Les Fossoyeurs] by Victor Castanet was an eye opener for the general public about past dysfunctions, but I can’t believe the government didn’t know anything. But hey, better late than never.”. She wonders in particular about the responsibilities of the regional health agencies (ARS) which have not complied with their control obligations.
In addition, the families of residents of Orpea establishments feel a “some frustration” because the government has decided not to make public the report of the General Inspectorate of Social Affairs (Igas) and the General Inspectorate of Finance (IGF) on the group due to business secrecy. “There, it is the interest of Orpea which takes precedence over the interest of the families that I represent, very clearly”, is sorry Sarah Saldmanadding that this decision stirred up “suspicions”.
The lawyer will file 50 to 100 complaints from families of residents during the first week of April for “manslaughter”, “negligent violence”, “endangering the lives of others” and “not – assistance to a person in danger”.
