“I am very proud of Laurence, of the work she has accomplished, said her mother, Louise Lagarde in an interview with TVA Nouvelles. It sure was an exciting night. I listened to the race with my son on FaceTime. It was the screams, the tears, the excitement. My pleasure in watching her race is to see her smile when she arrives, especially when she has a great race like that. For a mother, it’s really nice.”

“She’s been on the Canadian team for several years and she’s been working hard to achieve her goal,” she added.

Quebec Premier François Legault congratulated the 28-year-old athlete in a post on Twitter.

“Glad to be stressed”

Laurence St-Germain thus goes down in history, since it is the first gold medal in women’s slalom for Canada since 1960. Anne Heggtveit then won gold in slalom.

The main interested party fueled the pressure. This is what allowed him to overtake the American Mikaela Shiffrin.

“I worked hard in the last two weeks,” said Laurence St-Germain. I trusted my ski and didn’t think about the outcome and it worked […]. [Vendredi] evening, I was really stressed. I didn’t sleep well, but I was happy to be stressed, since I knew it was going to help me.”
