“I am an employee like any other”, assures Carlos Tavares, answering a question about his salary of 19 million euros per year

“It’s shocking and excessive” : this is how Emmanuel Macron reacted, during the presidential campaign, to the salary of Carlos Tavares. The CEO of the Stellantis automotive group received 19 million euros in 2021. “This is the result of a decision by my company’s board of directors. I am an employee like any other”said Carlos Tavares, questioned on franceinfo on this subject. “It is the translation of the fact that the results of the company are good, even very good, since 90% of my remuneration is variable. First of all, we must be happy about this, for the sustainability of the company, the taxes we pay and the business we generate”he pointed out.

“It is a subject specific to France”added the CEO. The question you are asking me here is never asked of me elsewhere.” It must be said that, in the street, it is time for interprofessional mobilization for a general increase in wages, while the purchasing power of households is eaten away by inflation.

Within the Stellantis group, wages were increased by 3.2% at the start of the year. “Lall of what was paid in 2022 [avec les primes] represents a little more than 7%” increase, underlined Carlos Tavares, estimating “normal that there is a sharing of wealth”.

A strike call has however been filed by the unions at Stellantis, calling on the company’s management not to confuse bonuses and salary increases. The baker does not sort between the euro which comes from the bonus and the euro which comes from the basic salary”replied the boss of the group.
