(Quebec) The Parti Québécois (PQ) encourages François Legault to organize the sectoral referendum on immigration that he mentioned during the electoral campaign, in order to resolve the impasse with the federal government.
PQ leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon even outlined on Tuesday the question that should be asked of citizens: do you believe that Quebec should decide for itself regarding immigration planning in Quebec?
Mr. St-Pierre Plamondon was reacting to the standoff between the CAQ government and Ottawa.
On Monday, the federal Minister of Immigration, Marc Miller, announced that he had instructed his officials to process 20,500 pending family reunification files, while Quebec nevertheless caps this type of immigration at 10,000 admissions per year.
According to Mr. St-Pierre Plamondon, Ottawa is thus flouting Quebec and putting the Quebec Ministry of Immigration under control.
Faced with the unfavorable balance of power in Quebec, the PQ leader suggests that Mr. Legault follow through with the idea he launched during the electoral campaign in 2022, namely to organize a sectoral referendum, where it would be asked to citizens if they are in favor of Quebec’s repatriation of all immigration powers.
