Hurricanes win against Islanders to lead series

Seth Jarvis scored twice as the Carolina Hurricanes snapped an eight-game road playoff losing streak, winning 5-2 against the New York Islanders on Sunday.

Sebastian Aho had a goal and an assist and goaltender Antti Raanta stopped 27 shots to help the Hurricanes win their first road game in the playoffs since their second-round duel in 2021.

Aho’s goal was his 20th in playoff games with the Hurricanes, surpassing the team record he shared with Eric Staal.

Martin Necas and Mackenzie MacEachern also scored, while Stefan Noesen had two assists, both on the power play.

The Hurricanes lead the series 3-1 and can eliminate the Islanders at home on Tuesday.

Defenseman Adam Pelech and forward Bo Horvat scored for the Islanders, who were down 4-0 early in the third period. Ilya Sorokin made 24 saves but more often than not he was left to his own devices on the goals he conceded.

The Islanders, who had given hope to their fans with a 5-1 victory at home on Friday night, didn’t show much and took bad penalties.

Despite cheers from their fans throughout the game, the Islanders struggled and walked off the ice to boos from the crowd as they trailed 3-0 after two periods.

Jarvis made it 4-0 early in the third period, scoring 2-1 with Aho. The 21-year-old striker said he was happy to win away.

“It only helps us. It’s not very good when we can’t win anywhere other than on our rink. It’s great to be able to pull off a win here and go home, hoping to wrap up this series in front of our fans. »

The Hurricanes took advantage of a two-man power play early in the game, and Jarvis scored at 4:05 of the first period.

“We had a good start to the game,” veteran Islanders forward Zach Parise said. They got a five against three from the start, however, and took advantage of it. »

Brent Burns got his fifth assist of the series, as Noesen got the rebound from the defenseman’s shot to pass the puck to Jarvis. This one just had to shoot into an open net.

Necas scored on the power play early in the second period, when Matt Martin was sent off for roughing.

Aho’s 20th goal came in a two-to-one overplay with MacEachern, who was recalled from the Minor Leagues due to the absence of Teuvo Teravainen, who suffered a broken hand in Game 2 .

Pelech scored a few minutes after Jarvis netted and Horvat scored on a breakaway against the keeper.
