Hurricanes eliminate Devils in five games

Jesper Fast deflected Jesperi Kotkaniemi’s shot at 7:09 in overtime and the Carolina Hurricanes eliminated the New Jersey Devils in five games on Thursday, finishing it off with a 3-2 win.

The goal came on the power play, late in the time Jonas Siegenthaler was in the dungeon. He had been punished for delaying the game, by sending a puck to the spectators.

Fast had missed a gaping net in the first third, sending the disc over the rod.

“He couldn’t believe it [quand c’est arrivé au premier vingt], said defenseman Jaccob Slavin, one of Carolina’s other scorers. It’s really great that he is the one who finished this. »

Brent Burns also scored for the Hurricanes, while Frederik Andersen stopped 27 shots.

Dawson Mercer and Timo Meier scored for the Devils. Akira Schmid made 36 saves.

The Hurricanes will play in their first Eastern Final since 2019.

They will play against the winners of the series between the Florida Panthers and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Both teams missed opportunities, leading to extra time.

For the Hurricanes, Seth Jarvis deflected a shot off the post just six minutes into the game.

The Devils then got a few chances in the second period.

The Hurricanes did what they couldn’t do in the first round: knock out a club in Game 5 at Carolina. They needed a sixth game before dropping the New York Islanders.

Fallout of the New York Rangers in the first round, the Devils won their first series since 2012.

“We knew we had to step up our game,” captain Nico Hischier said of Thursday’s game. I would say the team believed in it. The effort was there and we had chances. »
