Five people died in Hungary on Tuesday in a collision between a train and a van at a level crossing that caused the wagon to derail, police said in a statement.
“Five people died on the spot and more than ten were injured,” police said, adding that all the victims were passengers in the vehicle transporting employees to their place of work.
The accident occurred near Mindszent, 140 kilometers southeast of Budapest, shortly before 7 a.m. (5 a.m. GMT). The train derailed under the force of the collision.
According to the Hungarian national railway company MAV, the van entered the level crossing despite the signs announcing the arrival of the train.
“There were 22 passengers on the train, two were seriously injured, eight suffered minor injuries,” MAV said in a statement.
