Hundreds of comic book authors are calling in a forum published on the site “Autrices, Auteurs en Action” to vote on June 30 and July 7 for the New Popular Front, “the only political force to have to date proposed a compatible program”with their “wishes”. This column is entitled “Comics annoy the National Rally”The signatories include Florence Cestac, Etienne Davodeau, Marion Montaigne, Léa Castor and Vincent Vanoli.
“Since Tintin in the Congo, comics have changed a lot. Comics are now an engaged popular art”write the authors of this text, the publication of which is illustrated by a flame, emblem of the RN, burning a comic strip, a strong symbol to alert to the danger of the far-right party coming to power for the world of Culture. “Without authors, no comics!”.
“Witness to social, anti-racist, feminist, LGBTQIA+, psycho and disability inclusive struggles, today’s comics embrace the fight for a just and open society!”explains the platform.
“We, screenwriters, designers, colorists, letterers, graphic designers, translators, editors, booksellers, refuse the fate of having to live and work in a society promoting the values of the National Rally and other extreme parties RIGHT”denounces the signatories.
For these comic book authors, they list among the values of the extreme right: “Hatred and fear of others, racism, anti-Semitism, xenophobia, sexism, hatred of LGBTQIA+ people, people with disabilities or physical or mental illnesses, women and the freedom to control their bodies”.
“We refuse to bow to the forces that pit social groups against each other, that want to rule through terror and division, that claim to serve the people when all they want is to enslave them.”warns the platform.
“We reject the idea of living under a power that despises artists and intellectuals in order to better dumb down what it considers to be a rabble to be seduced. We see this extremely clearly through the example of the lamentable media empire of the fascist billionaire Vincent Bollore”.
