On Twitter, journalist Hugo Clément relays the video of a mother enjoying the campaign with her children. When fighter shots are heard, forcing them to the ground. Here is what the reporter concerned about ecological causes writes in the caption: “A mother films her daughters during a walk this morning in Arenthon in Haute-Savoie. When, suddenly… This is what rural dwellers go through during the hunting season. According to the mother, no “hunting in progress” sign was installed on this public road.
Every year, hunting accidents are numerous in France. The Aspas (Association for the Protection of Wild Animals) published on its site in September 2022 the official report (source OFB, French Office for Biodiversity) of the number of accidents caused by the leisure of hunting during the season. 2021-2022. Results: with 8 dead and 90 injured by firearm, the number of victims recorded increased by 10% compared to the 2020-2021 season. And it does not look much more glorious this season with already 6 accidents recorded since September 1, including 3 affecting non-hunters… Aspas does not fail to recall the need to establish a major and in-depth reform of hunting . Because if the practitioners of this sport remain the first concerned by the accidents, several non-hunters were injured, including cyclists, joggers, walkers, and two were killed: Joël Viard, a 67-year-old man hit by a shot while driving his car in Ille-et-Vilaine, and Mélodie Cauffet, a 25-year-old young woman shot by a teenage hunter while walking on a hiking trail in Cantal.

The hunt continued on Sunday
The association recalls that frequent incidents, often very serious (shooting in the direction of roads, houses, etc.), represent a real source of anxiety for rural people who are subject to hunting, sometimes 7 days a week in certain areas. For his part, Willy Schraen, the president of the National Federation of Hunters, always tries to minimize the facts by declaring: “There is no zero risk”, or even “a drunk guy on a bike is dangerous too!” as can be read on the Aspas website. On September 13, however, a final report was published in which some measures correspond to the demands of the association such as the need for an annual medical visit, the ban on alcohol or even a necessary shooting training. However, other measures have not been retained, such as the ban on hunting on Sundays or the establishment of a security perimeter around homes. In short, a weekend in the countryside remains for the time being at your own risk!
