My mother always said, “Those we loved are always with us.” They influence our thoughts and actions. » I have known Hubert Reeves thanks to a mutual Quebec friend since the 1980s. I have seen him and his partner, Camille, many times in Paris and in Malicorne, their second home. Sitting together, under the large trees of Malicorne, we read the manuscript of his first book, Patience in the azure. He said: “I want everyone, the cleaning lady, the taxi driver, to understand what I’m explaining, don’t be shy about making comments. » We walked with him, under the starry sky of Malicorne, the long path which led to the road. He explained to us, as a good teacher that he was, each of the configurations of the sky. It was wonderful ! We also had long, well-watered meals outside, during which he answered all the questions asked by the guests and, suddenly, he said: “My little children, I have to go to work! »
I also attended lectures he gave in the small village of Malicorne to audiences of local residents. Conferences during which he explained the Big Bang and answered all questions with simplicity. I remember one listener saying to him, “I understood everything you said, but I couldn’t repeat it!” »
We had a common passion: the education of all at all ages. We had long conversations on this subject. I invited him to the Canadian Commission for UNESCO that I chaired to give a conference: he came. I invited him to Paris to the International Institute for Research in Biomedical Ethics, and he came. Always the same as himself, very generous with his time, he captivated the audience.
Wonderful Hubert, I salute you and I always hear your special voice in my head.
