This March 4, 2024 is a historic date. The parliamentarians, all gathered at the Palace of Versailles, formalize the inclusion of the right to abortion in the French Constitution.
An outcome without suspense
At least 3/5 of parliamentarians must vote in favor of including abortion in the Constitution for it to be adopted. The text has already been approved by the National Assembly and the Senate by an overwhelming majority. The outcome of the vote is not a suspense. “We will be the first country in the world to enshrine in the Constitution this freedom for women to dispose of their bodies“, recalls Eric Dupond-Moretti. The last meeting of the Congress dates from 2018. Emmanuel Macron had invited deputies and senators to present his roadmap to them. The last revision of the Constitution dates from 2008. Nicolas Sarkozy had carried a “modernization of institutions”, in particular the limitation of the mandates of the President of the Republic.
