How to strip varnished wood with our expert druggist Romain Buquet

Customize a piece of furniture, renovate it or just repaint it: yes, but where to start? The first step not to be missed is to strip it well, especially if it is varnished. Step by step, our expert druggist Romain Buquet gives you the procedure to follow.

It’s not always easy to know where to start when you want to bring up to date, or just to your liking, a piece of furniture or a wooden support. Follow the good advice of Romain Buquetfrom the Humbert Buquet drugstore in Metz, to strip varnished wood.

Step 1: identify the right product for the right use

Varnish, wax or paint, you must first know what do we have to do before starting to treat, to be sure to use the right product.

Step 2: preparing the material

To strip your furniture, you need a liquid stripper (preferably) which will have better penetration and a nylon brush (so he won’t lose his hair). The product being quite corrosive, it is better to use it with gloves and wearing an apron.

Step 3: the application

Stripper should always be applied in the direction of the grain of the wood so that the product penetrates better, and generously then leave to act. When the stripper starts to dry it means it is penetrating the finish so it is best to reapply until it stays on the surface so the product can really emulsify, that is- to say bring to the surface all the material.

Step 4: cleaning

Without waiting for the stripper to be completely absorbed (the wood must still be damp), use steel wool (here, for oak, n°4) to clean the flat parts of your furniture, and for all molded parts, a small brush with steel bristles.

Step 5: the finish

Once your furniture has been stripped, pass some alcohol over the entire surface in order to neutralize the action of the stripper and you can then perform any finish without any problem.
