The number of urban rodeos is increasing in France. These practices are dangerous for pedestrians, but also for the drivers who engage in them. They risk up to a year in prison and a fine of 15,000 euros.

Some two-wheeler riders do back-wheeling or wild racing around city centers. These urban rodeos endanger pedestrians as well as those who carry them out. During the summer, the rodeos multiply and therefore the interventions also in recent years. “In the first months of 2022, we arrested 351 rodeo perpetrators and this led to the seizure of almost 200 vehicles”says Arthur Romano, deputy central commissioner in the 17th arrondissement of Paris.

In 2020, 2,864 offenses were recorded, compared to 3,206 in 2021. Since 2018, urban rodeos have been considered misdemeanors, punishable by one year in prison and a fine of 15,000 euros. When they take place in a meeting, the penalties increase to two years in prison and a fine of 30,000 euros. License suspensions or vehicle confiscations are also planned. “Penalties must be applied harshly”, asks Natalia Pouzyreff, Renaissance MP for Yvelines. In 2020, 584 convictions were handed down, for thousands of urban rodeos.
