How to protect your exotic plants before winter, with our garden expert Étienne Wirth

Let’s lift the veil…of wintering!

For protect your exotic plants – like citrus fruits or cycads for example – before the winter period, there are some rules to know so that everything goes as well as possible for these plants which are not accustomed to the climate of our region.

The wintering veil is the essential tool to protect them from cold and frost. It is a very fine and above all transparent veil, as it is essential for the chlorophyll function of the plant, that is to say its survival, that it allows light to pass through.

Just pass the veil directly over the plant, its foliage being sufficient as a support, fold it down at the top of the trunk and hold the veil with a piece of tape for example. The foliage will thus be protected from frost.

Don’t forget the roots

Just like foliage, the roots of your exotic plants fear the cold. To protect them, we then use a bubble wrap which we “wrap” the pot, even making several turns: this protection prevents the frost from burning the rootlets of the plant or the ice from s install there.

Thus protected, you can then leave your plants spend the winter outdoorspreferably against a wall or veranda that is not heated.
