Food: how to navigate the jungle of labels?
Food: how to navigate the jungle of labels? – (France 2)
There are many labels for food products in supermarkets, and not all of them meet the same demanding criteria. So, which names can we trust?
On the shelves, we don’t necessarily pay attention to the numerous and varied labels, which all carry a promise of origin or quality. How to find your way? Near Fougères (Ille-et-Vilaine), Aude Gaillard, farmer on the “Lait Gaillardises” farm, obtained the “Bleu blanc coeur” label six years ago. To be able to qualify, only one criterion is decisive: the feeding of your livestock. The label defends the good nutritional value of omega 3.
Favor the labels of public institutions
However, after 20 years of existence, the “Bleu blanc coeur” label is still not recognized by Ademe, the Ecological Transition agency. Some consumer associations criticize it for authorizing the use of pesticides or GMOs. For the association in charge of the label, their criteria for obtaining it are sufficient for the preservation of the environment. Other labels would be simple marketing logos, without control of the product. This is what Patricia Chairopoulos, editor-in-chief of the magazine, denounces 60 Million consumers. According to her, it is better to favor labels from public institutions, such as the AOP, IGP or Label Rouge labels.
