The heat is coming to part of France. In nursing homes and retirement homes, the heatwave plan has been in effect for over a month.
With their small cart filled with water, syrup or coffee, two facilitators go around the rooms. Since June 1st and the activation of the blue plan, this ritual takes place two to three times a day in a retirement home in Draguignan, in the Var. The goal is to encourage the elderly to drink. “I’m not thirsty, so I don’t think about drinking, but people often come by to remind us to be in order.”says Françoise Bouche, resident of the Ephad La Pierre de la Fée.
“They don’t have the same feeling of thirst as we do and, in fact, they tell us so frequently.”explains Véronique Couvert, facilitator. “So we ask them to take a small sip, but very often”she points out. In the lobby of the establishment, the blinds of the immense bay window are lowered and vigilance is increased to ensure that everyone remains in the building.
