In 2020, 17 million tons of CO2 were emitted due to mobile phones or computers. How to limit this digital pollution?
Digital pollution, generated by computers and telephones, is on the rise. It represented 17 million tonnes of CO2 emitted in 2020 and could reach 25 million tonnes in 2030. The manufacture of these devices, which requires a large quantity of materials, is the main cause of pollution. Land is thus extracted far from Europe. “221 kg of ore are needed to make a smartphone, 836 kg are needed to make a PC and 1.3 tons of ore to make a processor“, explains Tristan Labaume, president of the Green IT Alliance.
Keep your devices longer
It is possible to limit this pollution by changing devices less often. Ideally, you should keep your phone for at least four years. An association has pinned Apple several times, which would limit the performance of these iPhones, to push users to buy them. A repairability index, mandatory since 2021, can help in the choice of a new device.
