People who want to help Quebecers who have been victims of the fires that have been raging in recent days can do so online.
The Canadian Red Cross invites the public to make a donation at the following address: redcross.ca/donate. The organization also helps victims of forest fires in the Atlantic provinces and in Ontario.
Thursday, the Cogeco company announced that it wanted to donate $20,000 to the Canadian Red Cross in support of municipalities affected by the devastating effects of forest fires in Quebec and Ontario.
“Our hearts also go out to our employees who work in the communities most heavily affected, in particular those of our Planète 93.5 Chibougamau radio station,” the company said in a press release.
On Tuesday, the United Steelworkers Humanity Fund (MHF) announced that it has donated $35,000 to the Red Cross in support of the fight against wildfires in Nova Scotia, where more than 25,000 people have here been moved.
Immediate needs
On site in the affected regions of Quebec, the volunteers say they are able to meet the most immediate needs of the population displaced by the forest fires.
Julie Drolet, communications manager for the City of Roberval, in Lac-Saint-Jean, notes in an interview that the municipality is currently hosting around forty citizens evacuated from Chibougamau, a municipality further north.
“We mobilized the sports center, and we will relocate them locally,” she said. I would say that the needs are met in Roberval, in terms of food, clothing and accommodation. Even other cities contact us because they want to support us,” she says.
People under evacuation orders due to forest fires are also encouraged to register with the Red Cross, which will allow them to receive information about available services and assistance.
