The response from Maryse Friot, President of the Horticultural Society of Touraine.
Sophie, it’s just the right time to plant the spring-flowering bulbs! They are very important in landscapes and allow a certain number of them to feed insects when they wake up or when they are born.
vernus crocuses and chrysanthus are the most interesting from the month of February after the snowdrops. These are very small bulbs that must be installed in large numbers in semi-shaded spaces.
Chionidoxa luciliae called “The Glory of the Snows” is a charming little bulbous plant producing blue starry flowers with white throats. Planted in mass, it forms carpets under deciduous trees where light passes very easily between the branches.
The Tulip Group is made up of many species with very staggered flowering periods from February (very early) to March (early) until May (late). Their height ranges from 20 cm to 80 cm. All colors exist except pure blue.
The narcissus group includes daffodils white, yellow or more or less orange flowers. There is also the Narcissus poeticus : “narcissus of the poets” which has a very pleasant fragrance. Some species are pluriflorous such as Narcissus tazetta.
We must not forget the hyacinths with their pleasant fragrance and the fritillaries whose inflorescence composed of flowers in a crown always remains spectacular.
Ornamental garlic, lily of the valley, etc. are also among the flowers that can be planted now. It is important to install them in the garden. You can keep them for several years by dividing them because they are very prolific and each year give many small bulbs on their periphery called caïeux.cléré
