Fighting continues to rage in Gaza. Hospitals are overwhelmed and births are being bombed in maternity wards.
In the large tent camp of Rafah (Gaza), young mothers do not go out. They rest in their makeshift shelters. “I left the hospital two hours after giving birth. I didn’t stay long enough. The doctor only saw us once“, explains one of them. The latter fled Gaza City seven months pregnant, on foot, with two children and her husband.
150 deliveries per day at the Rafah maternity ward
In Gaza, a baby has been born every ten minutes since October 7, according to Unicef. At the Rafah maternity ward, the beds of women giving birth squeeze through the crowded corridors. 150 deliveries per day are recorded, compared to 40 before the war. Young mothers fear for their health and that of their baby. And for good reason, the maternity ward does not keep mothers for more than six hours.
