COP28: how to get away from fossil fuels?
COP28: how to get away from fossil fuels? – (France 2)
After the COP28 agreement which marks a transition away from fossil fuels, Wednesday December 13, what are the means to implement this exit?
Since the industrial revolution, the production of oil, coal and gas has increased exponentially. Even if the increase has slowed in recent years, fossil fuels represent 82% of the energy used in the world. “We are considering stabilization around 2030, (…) whereas by 2030, emissions should decrease by more than 40%”regrets Jean Jouzel, climatologist.
Renewable energies tripled by 2030
To limit global warming, CO2 emissions must stop increasing. “This is not compatible with the pursuit of exploration and exploitation of new fossil sources”indicates Valérie Masson-Delmotte, co-president of the 6e IPCC report. At COP28, for the first time, nuclear power is mentioned as a means of decarbonizing energy. States have committed to multiplying renewable energies by three by 2030. The final text also plans to improve energy efficiency at the global level, the development of hydrogen and carbon capture.
