For more than five years, Russian mercenaries from the Wagner militia have been present in the Central African Republic alongside the country’s army. A presence that does not please the United States, which decided, during the Africa-USA summit, in December 2022, to issue an ultimatum against the presence of mercenaries on Central African territory.
Central Africans are used to it. For five years now, white men, masked, have been systematically present at each exit of their president Faustin Archange Touadéra. Today, the Wagner militia supports the Central African army, secures the convoys, but also operates several mines there and controls the country’s customs. The United States is said to be trying to change the situation. A secret meeting would have been held in Washington, in December 2022, during the Africa-USA Summit. That day, a team from the White House would have offered to support the training of the Central African armed forces, and to increase their humanitarian aid, in the event of the departure of the militia. In case of refusal, they would be ready to cut off all funding. A pressure denounced by some.
The Central African Republic at the heart of the Russian-American conflict
This American attempt to extricate the Wagner militia is part of a broader strategy. “These maneuvers testify to the desire to weaken Russia, which is deploying aggressive diplomacy in Africa”says Charles Bouessel, senior consultant for the International Crisis Group.
The United States has not confirmed this information. The American embassy in the Central African Republic, via a Facebook post, only recalls that it respects the sovereignty of the country.
