On the eastern front, kyiv’s troops are trying to stem the advance of the Russian army, despite a lack of resources. While waiting for new support from the West, the Ukrainian soldiers are getting by.

Just one shot. You have to save ammunition. In eastern Ukraine, on the front, the 59th brigade, a Ukrainian tank unit, is fighting Russian troops with few resources. An unequal battle which does not undermine the determination of the Ukrainians. “Over the past ten days, the enemy has strengthened considerably. It’s demoralizing but we have the strength to fight”explains Maksim, the commander of the 59th brigade.

The promises of Western tanks are long overdue. The equipment provided dates from the Soviet era. In order to guard against Russian attacks, the 59th Brigade designed “grids placed on the armor of tanks”, explains Oleksandr, a soldier. A trick that struggles to suffice in the face of the Russian strike force. Since the start of the year, Moscow has reportedly retaken 880 square kilometers of land and conquered around fifty localities.
