how Republicans are trying to revive

Before the “States General of the Right” carried by Eric Ciotti, the party intends to meet to work on two main themes. Audrey Tison’s policy brief.

The Republicans want to get off to a good start… After spreading their divisions around the pension reform, the LR deputies are invited to a “cohesion seminar” at the beginning of May. During these “team building” days, don’t expect to see Eric Ciotti and Aurélien Pradié tugging. No, it’s a day that mixes cohesion and reflection, we specify.

“End of life” and “work value”

To lead the reflection, the deputies have an appointment at the Maison de l’Amérique Latine, in Paris and will work on two themes which will soon be the subject of a bill: the “end of life”, with as guest Jean Leonetti, but also the president of the French palliative care society; and the “work value”, dear to the right. More specifically, it will be a question of the evolutions of Work, in the wake of the Covid crisis, in the presence, in particular, of a speaker from the think tank on the right, La Concorde.

As for group cohesion, the sixty deputies will stay together for six hours, with lunch and coffee breaks, in a different setting from the Assembly. This should promote theinformal exchanges“, we slip. And then, there will be a time reserved for the functioning of the political group. Moreover, a preparation questionnaire has been sent to all LR deputies: how to improve the working method, what are the dysfunctions, what do they expect from the president and vice-presidents?

Most elected officials do not really want to dive back into the psychodramas of recent months: they want to project themselves, find ways to anticipate, to grease the wheels to better coordinate on future texts.

“Shadow Government”

A period of reflection will also be launched by Les Républicains, which is preparing “States General of the Right”, the project of Eric Ciotti, the new president. From the beginning of June, he will organize thematic reflections including activists to redefine the “ideological corpus”. It is a question of rearming the party in view of 2027. If an elected official admits that “Our software is a bit dated“, a party executive displays her optimism: this “aggiornamento is fundamental to define the right of the 21st century !“. The question of ecology should in particular be a priority.

And then, there is always in Eric Ciotti’s head the idea of appointing a “shadow government”, as in the United Kingdom. This “shadow government” will be launched “very shortly”, we are told.
