“How not to be alarmed?” Says the Minister of Culture about the appointment of Geoffroy Lejeune

The government takes a stand. Culture Minister Rima Abdul-Malak expressed deep concern for the “republican values”Sunday June 25, faced with the situation at Sunday newspaperon strike to prevent the planned arrival of a new editor marked on the far right. “My Sunday ritual was to wake up with the JDD. Today it does not appear”she wrote on social media. “I understand the concerns of its editorial staff. In law, the JDD can become whatever he wants, as long as he respects the law. But, for our republican values, how not to be alarmed?she continued.

The newspaper, controlled by Vincent Bolloré, has been shut down since Thursday and the vote for a strike which prevented its publication on Sunday. The movement was renewed until Wednesday. In question, the arrival of Geoffroy Lejeune, dismissed a week ago from the far-right weekly Current values.

The PS calls for “legislation”

On the left, the ecologist deputy Sandrine Rousseau gave her support to the employees on Sunday. The leader of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, for his part said “very worried about pluralism” and called to “legislate again to allow editorial independence”, recalling that the Socialists are working on a bill on the subject. The leader of the CGT, Sophie Binet, meanwhile, expressed her “full support for the journalists of the JDDbelieving that “the extension of Bolloré’s media empire is a serious danger to democracy”.
