A divorce worth several hundred million euros? Kylian Mbappé confirmed in an interview, published on Wednesday June 14 at the Gazzetta dello Sport, “do not want to activate the additional year provided for in the contract” which links him with Paris Saint-Germain. If the French international goes through with his contract, in June 2024, he could leave free and his new club could then get him back for free. Unimaginable on the PSG side. One solution, sell it this summer. But how much is Kylian Mbappé worth on the transfer market?

First of all, when a club recruits a player, it buys back the number of years of contract to which are added various parameters – performance, notoriety – to calculate a price. And the closer the player gets to the end of his contract, the cheaper it is. That’s for the theory. Regarding the French international, this is not the case at all. “Kylian Mbappé is a player who today retains a very high value on the transfer marketsays Christophe Lepetit, sports economist at the CDES in Limoges. Quite simply because he evolves in the category of superstars who have an extremely substantial salary and who, above all, are players with rare talent.

“Kylian Mbappé is in a situation of monopoly on the labor market or quasi-monopoly.”

This monopoly has a price. According to various specialized organizations, the market value of Kylian Mbappé is between 180 and 250 million euros. Either one of the most expensive players in the world. As a reminder, the record is held by his future ex-teammate Neymar, recruited in 2017 by PSG for 222 million euros. A ranking where does not appear the French Karim Benzema who has just signed in Saudi Arabia nor Lionel Messi for his departure for Inter Miami. These players were out of contract with their club and free to sign up wherever they want. There was therefore no transfer between two clubs, the sums revealed in the press correspond to salaries or bonuses.

This price is not likely to slow down the candidates for the takeover. In 2021, Kylian Mbappé was in the same situation, he only had one year of contract left. At the time, Real Madrid offered 200 million euros, an offer refused by PSG. This time, the capital club would welcome such a proposal with open arms. It would be by far the biggest sale of PSG on the transfer market which, for the moment, is that of Gonçalo Guedes in Valencia in 2018. The Portuguese player had been sold between 40 and 57 million euros, bonus included.
