For several months, the volcanoes in Iceland have been waking up, causing concern among local authorities and residents. The town of Grindavik has already been evacuated in November 2023. “We don’t know when, but we are going to have sites that will have a completely different appearance”, worries Julie Kermarec, a young French woman who became a ranger in Iceland. On December 18, 2023, 3 kilometers from Grindavik, lava fountains gushed from the bowels of the Earth. The eruption lasted 48 hours. Since then, cracks have opened in the ground, but residents have returned home.
Still high risk
However, the ground continues to swell under the pressure of the magma. In the capital, Reykjavik, surveillance takes place constantly, looking for new breaches in the territory of the peninsula. Researchers are concerned about the progression of lava underground. The volcanic risk is still high in this country.
