Israeli bombings continue in Gaza, as do rocket attacks on Israel. On Tuesday, October 10, a hail of missiles fell on Ashkelon at 4 p.m.

These missiles fired by Hamas are largely neutralized by the iron shield. How does it work ? “It is a network of 30 to 40 missile launchers, each can fire up to 20 missiles to intercept enemy rockets, up to 70 kilometers away. They are coupled to radars capable of detecting a rocket launch 100 km away. These radars track around a hundred projectiles at the same time“, explains journalist Nicolas Chateauneuf, on the set of 20 Heures.

An “unprecedented” volume of rockets

When a rocket is fired, the radar “transmits the information to a command post where a computer will calculate its trajectory in a few seconds.. If the rocket risks hitting an inhabited area, an interception is triggered. “Israel claims that for 12 years, this aerial protection dome has an efficiency of 95%“, continues the journalist. Hamas, however, showed the limits of the Iron Dome, by announcing that it had fired 5,000 rockets in a few hours – half as many according to Israel. “A new volume“, says Nicolas Chateauneuf.

Given the scale of the attack in recent days, with even more rockets launched, we can assume that several dozen of them reached populated areas“, concludes the journalist.
