The “cold case” unit, dedicated to unsolved crimes, was created in 2022 and is located at the Nanterre court (Hauts-de-Seine). He is currently analyzing around a hundred cases. So how do these investigators work? Investigation.
It is a place under very high surveillance, unique in Europe. The memory of past crimes rests there. Valuable documents under seal are kept. “Even if we have not found the author of the offense, with the progress of science, it is possible that one day we will be able to have a result”, explains Captain Amel Larnane, from the central service for the preservation of biological samples. Will unsolved crimes one day be solved thanks to science? The families of victims want to believe it.
Artificial intelligence used
Dozens of investigations have already been relaunched. One of the first steps is the search for new clues on the seals to identify possible suspects. To make them talk, you must first use ultraviolet light, which reveals tiny traces of DNA invisible to the naked eye. To differentiate DNA, they must be analyzed and sorted, using artificial intelligence. The DNA extract is then compared to the genetic fingerprint file.
