Several Desjardins customers who have received an Interac transfer in recent days in connection with the “lost time claim” are confused. Some believe in fraud. Others have forgotten the answer to their security question and are worried that they will not be able to receive their due. Here are some answers to your questions to see more clearly.
What is it about ?
As part of the class action related to the Desjardins data theft that broke out in 2019, customers who filed a claim for “loss of time” received compensation by Interac transfer on Tuesday and Wednesday.
This amount is used to compensate for the time you had to spend (and therefore lose) registering with Equifax or researching the consequences of data leakage, for example.
The compensation can go up to $90, for an hourly rate of $18 per hour lost, and a maximum of five claimable hours.
How to receive your due?
“Eligible persons have all received an email to deposit the funds into the account of their choice,” says Jean-Benoît Turcotti, spokesperson for Desjardins. “No text message was sent,” he said.
Be sure to check the sender’s email address, which should be: [email protected]
Unless you have signed up for automatic deposit of electronic transfers through your financial institution, you will be asked to answer a security question. The answer is the one you indicated when submitting your complaint.
No other information will be requested.
People who requested payment by check should receive it in the next few days. Checks will be mailed by July 19.
What to do when you forgot the answer to your security question?
If you enter an incorrect answer three times, your payment will be blocked.
You can contact RicePoint, the independent administrator in charge of the distribution of the sums, from Monday, July 17, at the following number: 1-888-886-7164.
To authenticate you, you will be asked for your Claim Number which can be found in the email confirming your eligibility for the settlement. Once your identification has been confirmed, an agent will communicate your password to you. Save it!
A new email to collect your indemnity will be sent to you by August 31.
Is there still time to file a claim?
It is too late to file a claim for lost time. You had to submit an application before mid-April. However, there is a second category of claim for which it is still possible to apply.
“Individuals who have suffered identity theft can submit a claim until October 20, 2025, with three payment periods that will be issued before January 18 of the years 2024, 2025, 2026,” said Turcotti. “To receive payment by January 18, 2024, an application must be submitted by October 20, 2023,” it says.
As part of this claim, you could receive up to $1,000 if you were indeed the victim of identity theft. You can check if you meet the eligibility criteria by visiting the official Desjardins settlement website.
