In South America, Chile has been facing particularly deadly fires for four days. The provisional toll is 122 dead. Around forty outbreaks are still active.
A fire trap that closes on terrified firefighters. Chile had never experienced such fires, 122 deaths according to a provisional report. Why so many victims? A charred landscape as far as the eye can see, for miles, houses are reduced to simple walls. The wind pushed the flames at breakneck speed. Some neighborhoods were in fact shanty towns, built on fire zones, according to authorities. But according to experts, this fire was uncontrollable anyway. Arson? Yes, the number of fire outbreaks leaves firefighters with little doubt. An investigation has been opened, the perpetrators risk up to 20 years in prison.
