War in Ukraine: how can Europe speed up munitions production?

(Franceinfo)

While it has renewed its support for Ukraine, Europe aims to intensify the delivery of munitions. France hopes to triple its production of shells, currently 20,000 per year.

On the front in Ukraine, ammo is scarce : they are therefore used sparingly by soldiers. One of them testifies. “The last time we had deliveries was two months ago, and only one or two boxes”, laments the artilleryman. Faced with this shortage, how can Ukraine’s allies respond? The European Union, for example, has increased its ammunition production by 20 to 30% since the start of the war.

France hopes to increase its production of shells

On the French side, the Nexter factory, which manufactures 155mm shells for the CAESAR, has intensified its production. A senatorial report explains that France produces 20,000 shells per year, a figure it hopes to double, then triple. However, the figure of 20,000 shells represents what Ukraine uses in just two days. If Germany also increases its production, the Czech Republic offers as a solution the use of shells from third countries.
