With the war in Ukraine, Ukrainian sport and athletes had to se reinvent and organize differently. Some Ukrainian athletes went into exile abroad to prepare, among others, the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Some came to France. A year ago, the Minister of Sports, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, promised to release aid of one million euros for Ukrainian athletes in view ofe of the Games, so that Ukraine can be embodied in the most beautiful way.
Athletes who died on the battlefield
Other Ukrainian athletes have chosen to stay in the country, this is the case of the twins Maryna and Vladyslava Aleksiïva. Bronze medalists in Tokyo in artistic swimming, they can no longer train peacefully. Others lost their lives trying to stay in Ukraine. According to the Sports Ministry, more than 400 Ukrainian athletes have died since the Russian invasion began. Finally, some joined the Ukrainian army, like the former tennis player Alexandr Dolgopolov, while others died on the battlefield, like the shooter Egor Kigitov or the boxer Maksym Galynichev, explains the journalist from France Télévisions, Karim Bennani.
