A loved one in nursing home is a financial burden for families. By deducting aid, they have to spend an average of 2,200 euros each month. What is the business model of these establishments?

France has 7,300 nursing homes in France and they can accommodate nearly 600,000 elderly people. These establishments have different statuses. Almost half, 45% are public, 31% associations and 24% are private for profit. The nursing home private are more expensive on average: 90 euros per day against 58 euros in the public.


Prices are higher in the private sector, but the supervision rate is lower. Staff regularly denounce understaffing and a race for profitability. But how are the nursing home ? The State with the regional health agencies pay the bulk of caregiver salaries. The departments contribute to the financing of supplies. Families pay for accommodation and meals. The two main groups ofnursing home companies in France made more than 200,000 million euros in profit last year.
