Three months before the second round of the presidential election, the debate on purchasing power is gaining momentum. But the question of housing, which is central for many French people, is rarely mentioned. Eco guest of franceinfo, Monday January 24, Véronique Bédague, general manager of Nexity, even believes that “housing is the real unspoken part of this debate“.

According to the OECD, in France, in twenty years, the real price of housing has almost doubled. “None of us are going to arbitrate between our roof and our holidays“, underlines Véronique Bédague, for whom “this expense must not continue to increase as it increases“: “We really have to put housing back at the heart of this debate (…) The higher your income, the lower the share of housing in your expenses. The more modest you are, the more this share increasese”.

“It is both a subject of purchasing power and a subject of social equality, of social consensus.”

According to the leader, the rise in prices is easily explained: “explosion” land prices, rising construction costs, “timidity” elected officials and the population when it comes to building. The CEO of Nexity advocates the development of “denser cities“: “It is increasingly necessary to build on the existing city. There is a reduction in the artificialization of land, and therefore to house more French people, we must relearn how to work on the existing city“.
