Between the Landes and the Gironde, the A63 was closed in both directions, Wednesday August 10. 17 houses burned down, and more than 10,000 people were evacuated.
Isolated houses, surrounded by fire and devoured by flames: on the evening of Tuesday August 9, part of the Gironde was consumed, forcing dozens of inhabitants to flee, escorted by the gendarmes. “We don’t know when we will be able to return, and that’s more what’s embarrassing”says a woman. In the early morning, part of Belin-Béliet (Gironde), a village in the heart of the Landes forest, turned into a ghost town. 17 houses were destroyed.
Faced with the threat, some neighbors reluctantly left their homes. “I made the foundations, up to the roof. So yes, it’s a big part of my life. (…) I have a ball, it’s hard”confides a man, his throat tight.
In the neighboring town of Moustey (Gironde), evacuation was compulsory for all neighborhoods. While some have already hit the road, others are more reluctant. Christian and Colette, 87 and 86, are too attached to their house, invested in 1960. To encourage them to leave, their granddaughter came especially from Bordeaux (Gironde). Throughout the day, a civil security team patrolled to evacuate single, fragile and dependent people.
