In Iceland, the eruption of a volcano caused two fissures and lava flows engulfed three houses in Grindavik on Sunday January 14. The entire village had been evacuated the day before. Reporting.

Lava reached homes in Grindavik on Sunday January 14. At 1,200 degrees, the houses did not last long. Three of them burned away, or were partially engulfed by molten rock. One of the owners, Hrannar Jón Emilsson, lost his new house, which he would have moved into if the town had not been evacuated two months earlier. “It’s surreal to watch your house disappear”he confides.

Lava had not reached homes for 51 years

In Iceland, an island accustomed to eruptions, lava had not reached homes for 51 years. In a serious tone, the president, Gudni Johannesson, addressed the nation live. After an initial eruption on December 18, Iceland was on alert, and a dike was being built to protect Grindavik. “In addition to the houses destroyed by the lava, the city is now riddled with cracks, and two months after being first evacuated from their city, there is no indication that residents will be able to return to settle there”comments Ambroise Bouleis, special correspondent in Reykjanes (Iceland).
