Hostas are perennials, so they regrow every year. The hosta is part of the Liliaceae family, like the lily, the lilac or the asparagus.
They are especially appreciated for their very pretty leaves, often variegated, of different colors, green, yellow, cream, etc. Some varieties can have leaves up to 80 centimeters long!
Plant hostas!
The hosta likes places in the shade or partial shade, and a cool soil without excess humidity. They thrive at the foot of tall trees or in the shade of a hedge. Their flowering is also very pretty but rather discreet and spreads out from May to September depending on the variety. The plant will completely disappear in winter and grow back in spring. It is very resistant to cold and withstands harsh winters.
Plant them in the ground, in clumps, by mixing several varieties, or in a very deep pot, always in the shade, it also works.
There are about forty species and hundreds of varieties of hostas. Roland recommends a few:
- hosta Calypso, variegated leaves not very large, green and white well marked,
- Hosta Orange Marmelade, a mixture of green and white, streaked but more nuanced,
- the Party Popper hosta, with the heart of the yellow and ribbed leaf,
- the Paul Revere hosta, the leaf is cream with a thin green border,
- the Praying Hands hosta, with small, slightly closed leaves, very green with a few yellow streaks,
Have fun collecting them and mixing them in the garden.
