The Association of Caregivers of the Capitale-Nationale welcomes the home hospitalization project. Finally, a long-awaited move towards home care and services. This pilot project responds to the needs so expressed by the population for years and proclaimed by reports and commissions in Quebec.
Quebec has always known how to set itself apart with social policies that benefit families, such as daycare centers and dental care. Their success means that they are subsequently applied at the national level. It is possible to think that this project will follow the trend.
Although a first big step has been taken with selective home hospitalization accompanied by the required services, we are still awaiting the same decision for home support with respite service for people with loss of autonomy, as is already done in the Scandinavian countries. Here in Quebec, since 2014, Dr. Réjean Hébert has been promoting home care services. In his book Caring for the old, he talks about “changing the way of funding services to avoid undue recourse to residential institutions”. The desired objective is to reduce rehousing and thus meet the needs of caregivers and assisted persons, 96% of whom want to live and die at home. It is hoped that one day anyone will be able to live in their own home for as long as they want and thus remain included in their community.
