More and more emergency services are stretched thin and staff are exhausted. So, in recent weeks, closures have multiplied, from a few hours to several days. Illustration in Saint-Calais, in the Sarthe.
Curtains are closed, empty rooms and deserted corridors. The emergencies of the small town of Saint-Calais, in Sarthe, have been closed for a week. Enough to deprive the inhabitants of part of their hospital. No paramedical care is provided so in case of emergency, the 3,000 inhabitants of the city must go to the south of the department. The nearest hospital is more than 40 km away, Montval sur Loir (Sarthe).
In this hospital, the staff is also lacking, so the service opens alternately with the service of the neighboring town. So it’s one hospital instead of two. Wait times for patients are getting longer. Sarthe is not an isolated case. This summer, dozens of emergency services were closed all over France. In July, 42 establishments were unable to open at night, 23 were unable to accommodate patients during the day. Downstream (Mayenne)the repeated closure of emergencies at night led the unions to file a report with the public prosecutor for endangering staff and the population.
