We bet pitcher Chris Bassitt would have preferred a better outing on his first start for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Sunday afternoon, the 34-year-old veteran gave up nine earned runs on ten hits in a 9-4 loss to the Cardinals in St. Louis.
Bassitt (0-1) saw the first two hitters he faced, Brendan Donovan and Alec Burleson, hit home runs. Nolan Gorman also took advantage of the gunner’s largesse to send the ball out of bounds twice.
The Jays starter saw his game come to an end after three and a third innings of work. Bassitt became the first pitcher in Queen City club history to allow four home runs in his first game. The Ohio native joined the Jays as a free agent last offseason. He signed a three-year contract worth a total of $63 million.
“I’m going to have to watch all of this,” said Bassitt, whose comments were reported by Sportsnet. The height of my throws, all that, seeing if I leaned, anything. The victory went to the record of Jordan Montgomery (0-1). The latter allowed three runs on six hits in five innings of work.
By virtue of this loss, the Blue Jays lost their first series of the 2023 season. They had won the first game of this three-game series, but lost the flag in the following two meetings.
On Monday, the Jays will open a three-game series against the Royals in Kansas City.
