Hood problem | Tesla recalls over 1.8 million vehicles

Tesla is recalling more than 1.8 million vehicles over a hood problem that could increase the risk of a crash.

The car manufacturer, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, is recalling certain Model 3, Model S and Model X vehicles from the 2020-2024 period, as well as Model Y vehicles from the 2021-2024 period.

The issue is with the hood latch assembly which might not detect an unlocked hood after it has been opened.

The unlocked hood may open completely while the vehicle is in motion, potentially obstructing the driver’s view and increasing the risk of a crash. The company is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or deaths related to this issue.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press.

Tesla began investigating customer complaints about the issue on Model 3 and Model Y vehicles reported in China on March 25. By mid-April, the automaker had identified the issue affecting affected vehicles in China as a deformed lock switch.

Tesla continued to investigate the issue and found that the rates of occurrence were higher in China than in Europe and North America. The reason for this disparity is unknown.

Tesla said that as of July 20, it had identified three warranty claims or reports for U.S. vehicles related or potentially related to the hood issue.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a U.S. agency, noted that Tesla had released a free software update to address the issue.

Landlord notification letters are expected to be mailed on September 22.

In June, Tesla recalled its futuristic new Cybertruck pickup truck for the fourth time in the United States since it went on sale on November 30 to address issues with trim pieces that could come loose and front windshield wipers that could fail.
