In France, 30% of honey consumed is imported. In order to better inform consumers, more precise labels will be affixed to the jars.

Honey is the simplest food there is, but also the most tampered with. The origin of honey is often a mystery. 30% of the honey we eat is imported. Until 2020, there were honeys originating or not originating in the EU. It’s difficult to get any more vague. Today, the names of countries are mandatory on labels, and no longer just abbreviations. Tomorrow maybea blend of honey must mention the percentage used.

Consumers and beekeepers have everything to gain. Gerard Bernheim is not against a little more transparency. “It can bring people back to pure honey. Because today, people are very sensitive to origins”indicates this beekeeper from Seine-et-Marne who harvests 600 kilos of honey per year. For him, a label must be a signature. Close to half of European imports would be fraudulent. NGOs are calling for more control and real tests on honey.
