Honda | The new Civic Si shuns the overbidding of power

In an age when you can get a Tesla Model S of over 1,000 hp and most supercars have cavalry that blithely exceeds 600 hp, the power surge, as unnecessary as it is, is very real. The latest generation of the Civic Si presented last week, however, decided to shy away from this positioning, which was elevated to the rank of convention. But you probably won’t realize it.

This Civic Si seeks to honor the concept of an affordable and practical sporty compact.

Based on the premise of the 11e generation of the popular compact whose marketing is very recent, this Civic Si seeks to honor the concept of compact with an affordable and practical sporting inclination. This newcomer, however, will challenge the idea that immense power is required with a turbocharged 1.5 L four-cylinder whose count drops by 5 hp to 200 hp. That’s 41 hp less than its direct rival at Volkswagen, the Golf GTI.

Honda specifies, however, that it has emphasized the flexibility of this mechanism with a more constant power curve around maximum speed and by using a lighter engine flywheel for more responsiveness.

Like the outgoing generation, this Civic Si will also be outfitted exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission that employs the R-Type livery’s engine speed synchronization system. It is teamed with a mechanical limited-slip differential.

But this Civic Si wants first and foremost to be defined by how it feels behind the wheel. Based on a new, stiffer platform with an extended wheelbase, this version receives the addition of wider tracks than the production variant, along with beefier anti-roll bars and firmer suspension springs. The steering feel has been enhanced through the use of less loose pads.

The Honda Civic Si will go on sale by the end of the year.
