Volcanic eruption in Iceland: homes engulfed by lava
Volcanic eruption in Iceland: homes engulfed by lava – (FRANCEINFO)
Several houses have been destroyed by lava after a volcano erupted in southwest Iceland. They had been evacuated two months earlier after alerts.
In Grindavik (Iceland), the lava continues its inexorable course, Monday January 15. A wall of molten lava advances and destroys roads and homes. The owner of a house is resigned after his house burns: “It’s a bit surreal to see your family home disappear. I barely realize what’s happening.” Since the alerts in November, the town of 4,000 inhabitants has been almost empty. When the eruption started, two faults opened. The last residents had to be evacuated during the night.
No houses affected for over 50 years
In Iceland, eruptions are frequent: five in the last three years. But houses have not been affected for 51 years. “Today is a dark day for Grindavik and forIceland. But the sun will rise again. Together we will face this trauma“, promised Katrín Jakobsdóttir, the Icelandic Prime Minister. A man died on Wednesday January 10 when he fell into a crevasse.
